Espiritu Santo Island Tour
Espíritu Santo Island is a tourist destination in Baja California Sur, Mexico, known for its natural beauty and biodiversity. It is an uninhabited site that is part of the Espíritu Santo Archipelago National Park.
History
- Hernán Cortés discovered it in 1534 and named it the Island of Pearls.
- In 1631, Francisco de Ortega and Juan de Iturbide renamed it Espíritu Santo Island.
- In the 19th century, Gastón Vives established a pearl farm in San Gabriel Bay.
- In 2005, UNESCO declared it a World Natural Heritage Site.
- In 2007, it was officially designated as Espíritu Santo Archipelago National Park.
Biodiversity
- The island features a variety of habitats, including mangroves, rocky reefs, beaches, bays, and estuaries.
- It is home to a rich diversity of fish, mammals, seabirds, and invertebrates.
- 32 reptile species, 98 bird species, and 16 endemic species have been recorded.
